I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to teach English to underprivileged children, adolescents and adults in Hanoi, Vietnam. I was able to teach students through the use of interactive games, drawing and singing experiences.

My daily routine consisted of a homemade Vietnamese breakfast, having the morning off to enjoy the buzzing city, and then teaching from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Because of my experience, I am now more confident, socially aware and have a gigantic sense of satisfaction!

Exchange to Hanoi, Vietnam
One of my most cherished items from my exchange is a drawing from a girl I taught at the orphanage. On my last day at the orphanage, one of the girls came up to me and secretly gave me this amazing drawing. It was so detailed and it actually blew my mind how someone could be so talented.

She told me not to tell any of the other volunteers because she only drew it for me... because she didn’t want me to forget her. I was so touched but so surprised because I didn’t think I had made a big enough impact. The little things actually count and it was these little but meaningful interactions that will always stick with me.

Exchange to Malang, Indonesia
There was a 16 year old boy in the orphanage I taught at whose name was Emanuel.

Everyday after my English lesson, when the other kids rushed outside to play basketball, Emanuel would chat to me about everything he knew about Australia - kangaroos, koalas and the beach.

I found it incredible how willing and eager he was to learn, and all he needed was to be given that opportunity to do so.

Exchange to Manila, Philippines
I think exchange helps you realise your deeper potential and lets you confront any fears you might have. It teaches you to become independent and more self-confident, while also enabling you to make a positive impact on the community you work with.
