Do something different this summer...

What is AIESEC’s Summer Overseas?

AIESEC’s Summer Overseas is an exchange program that aims to provide young people from New South Wales with personal and professional development opportunities. The program provides you with the opportunity to gain skills around leadership and management while studying at university, and then apply those skills by participating in AIESEC’s international exchange program. Quite simply, the program consists of three steps.Three Step: Apply Online. Gain Skills. Go on Exchange

Step One: This requires you to complete an online application form, which can be found on this website. More about the application process, and a link to our application form, can be found by clicking here.

Step Two: Will see you become a member of AIESEC at your university. You’ll become a proactive member of a team, and will be provided with opportunities to develop leadership and management skills.

Step Three: During semester, AIESEC will help match you up with an available internship overseas. Then, once your exams are over, you will fly off to complete your fantastic Summer Overseas experience.

How long will my exchange experience last?

AIESEC’s Summer Overseas program offers international internships that you can complete during your summer break.

  • The internships last between 6 and 12 weeks (depending on which opportunity you take up)
  • The internships will start in November, December or at the latest, January. Again, start dates vary depending on which internship you apply for

This means you can leave Australia after your exams are over, and come back home before the start of Semester 1, 2010.

At which universities does the program run?

AIESEC New South Wales is currently operating at 4 universities. They are:

·         Macquarie University

·         University of New South Wales

·         University of Sydney

·         University of Technology, Sydney

If you do not attend one of these universities, but are interested in participating in AIESEC’s Summer Overseas program, please contact benjamin.miller@aiesec.net

Where can I go, and what kind of internships are available?

Each of the four universities mentioned above will offer different exchange opportunities. You can find out about these by clicking on the “Where can I go” tab.

AIESEC’s Summer Overseas program offers a wide variety of internships, but most of them can be broadly categorised by the following characteristics

·         There are no internships in highly developed countries, such as America, France, England or New Zealand

·         Most internships will be found in the following geographic areas: Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe

·          All internships will allow you to have a positive impact in the community in which you work. Sometimes this means ‘volunteer work,’ such as providing education on HIV/Aids to children in Africa. However, this can also mean working as a marketing manager for a not-for-profit in India.

For more specific information regarding the internships available through your university, please see the “Where can I go” tab.

Will I get paid?

Different internships offer different financial compensation. Often, one of the following will happen:

  A) You will receive a small wage that covers basic costs, such as food, transport and accomodation    or

            B) You will receive little/no wage, but free accomodation, free food and free transport to and from work

Essentially, you will not receive a large salary while on exchange. However, you will have basic needs provided for.

You can find out more information about specific internships by clicking on the "Where can I go" tab. AIESEC can also provide you with much more information once you have completed the application form for the Summer Overseas program, which can be found here

What are the benefits of AIESEC’s Summer Overseas program?

1)    Experience a new culture – you will be living in a different country and working with locals, allowing you to experience a new culture and, maybe, giving you different perspective on the world. And, while you're at it, you might also have some fun!

2)    Personal and professional development – participating in AIESEC’s Summer Overseas program will provide you with two unique opportunities to develop a range of personal and professional skills. First, working with AIESEC at your university, and then later while on exchange, you will be working in challenging environments, working in teams and gaining valuable leadership and management experience.

3)    Differentiate yourself – stand out from the crowd by doing something different, and gaining a unique set of skills in the process.

4)    Have a positive impact – all of the internships offered through the Summer Overseas program will, in some way, allow you to have a positive impact on the community/communities in which you work. The nature of this impact is determined by the internship you take on.
